A Day in the Life…

‘Day in the Life of a Trainee’ – Lydia

Whilst being a Connect trainee your days can vary massively. However, a ‘normal’ day in school might be like this…

8.50am The day will start with helping in a tutor group. Building relationships with students and offering pastoral support to students who need it.
9.10 am Year 7 RE lesson. This includes helping young people who are struggling, sharing what you believe as a Christian and it may also include leading or teaching a little part of the lesson.
10.10 am Year 10 RE lesson. The class will be looking at something on the GCSE curriculum and if they are looking at Christian views you will most likely be asked to share what you think or share about other Christian views.
11.10 am Break time- you have a prayer space. You are leading this session and will come up with a creative way that the young people can pray. For example, this might include paper aeroplane prayers or praying through the TSP prayer.
11.30 am At some point in the week, you will have time to mentor students. This works differently in every school, but they will be referred to you by a tutor or a Head of House. Most mentoring sessions last around 15- 30 minutes.
12.30 pm Year 9 Drama lesson. You will get the choice as to which other lessons you support in. These are subjects that you have some knowledge on or are interested in. These lessons are really good for relationship building with students and you can have some really profound conversations.
1.30 pm Lunch time- you have time to eat your lunch before walking around the school for a bit. There are no clubs at lunch today so instead you can have a walk around the school to see whether you can chat to any young people and see if you can support any young people who might need someone to talk to during lunch time.
2.30 pm Year 8 RE lesson. The younger year groups are looking at world religions and so you can pick up the content quickly and its quite easy to take part in helping students in these lessons.
3.30 pm End of the school day.
7- 8.30 Youth group at a church. You will be involved in serving tuck, playing games and hanging out with young people and this week you are doing a quick 5 minute Bible talk on one of the fruits of the spirit.

“Connect workers are invaluable in our classroom providing us with support both academically in RS lessons but also pastoral support around the school. We would highly recommend for any school to work with them!”

Lauren Partridge, Head of RS, QE Academy
